Trees of Henter

The oldest trees in the village of Sântimbru are in the courtyard of the Henter mansion, which also tell about our past. Historical descriptions inform us that mansions had characteristic parks. Even in this case there was a several-hectare park with ennobled plants and a fishpond around the mansion. As part of this, ash trees, locust trees and chestnuts survived.

The chestnut tree has a real cult in the history of our people. There are several references to chestnuts in the letters of King Béla IV and King Imre, but the love of chestnuts is also associated with the names Rákóczi and King Matthias Corvinus. King Matthias was responsible for the spread of this species, as one of his favourite dishes was chestnut-stuffed capon. But chestnuts are also present in literature, art, folk customs, beliefs, proverbs and sayings. We say, for example, "You pull chestnuts from the fire with a cat's paws". But chestnuts also appear in proverbs from all over Europe, and these mainly refer to someone who likes or wants to get someone else to do his or her own work.

TOMOGRAPH PICTURE

Result obtained with the ultrasonic tomograph: this chestnut is severely affected and it is in an advanced poor condition over a very large area of the trunk cross-section (65%). This specimen according to the tomograms shows a hollow inside the trunk, which was not visible on visual examination.

The care proposal: tree maintenance is achieved through care, especially by removing dry, decaying branches that pose a risk of breakage/fall and damage. Where the tree is in an advanced state of decline and is due for removal, replacement with seedlings of hardy ornamental tree/shrub species should be undertaken to optimize ecological, aesthetic and recreational functions.
